The Gospel tells the story of Jesus, peacefully sleeping in a boat during a great storm, while the disciples with Him were terrified. Remember: these men were fishermen who knew the ways of wind and waves -- so it must have been an unusually fierce storm! Yet Jesus slept on, apparently oblivious to their distress. When they woke Jesus, He calmed the sea, and their awe shifted away from the storm, and onto Him.

There are so many aspects of this story that invite reflection.

About its elements
The beads of the weeks are grey onyx for the clouds and the sea; the Botwana agate cruciform beads are for the roiling clouds I imagine in the storm that night. The clear blue fluorite of the invitatory bead, as well as the carefully-matched Swarovsky crystal, is for the peaceful dreams I imagine Jesus enjoyed as he slept in the boat. The cross I've chosen for this is one of my favorites for what it symbolizes. A simple sterling silver cross, it has an open space in the center. It makes me think of the empty tomb; it also reminds me that sometimes we need to empty ourselves to let God in.
